MUTANTS VS ULTRAS: FIRST ENCOUNTERS (part 2, 1995) / SHEDDING SKIN (part 2, 1995) Turns out the reason Wolverine's so short is he's had his neck removed... MORE: bit.ly/MutantsVsUltras-Part2 --- Artists: Kyle Hotz & Jimmy Palmiotti Colours: Mickey Rose Script: Steve Englehart From: Night Man vs Wolverine 0 (interior) Featuring: Wolverine (of Earth-616) vs NightMan of (Earth-93060) --- NEW UPDATE: Another Ultra finds himself in the Marvel Universe when Night Man gets transported across realties by Rhiannon. In our latest What Are You Reading? column, Shane Bailey talks about all those Black Panther comics Marvel has been offering for free:
Shortly after Chadwick Boseman’s death, to honor his life and his role in their success, Marvel and comiXology released about $800 worth of Black Panther comics for free. These series were some of the best at Marvel during their respective eras full of the best creators and memorable stories, but none shined as brightly as the 1998 Black Panther series, launched by Christopher Priest with artist Mark Texiera, but full of creators like Sal Velutto, Joe Jusko, Kyle Hotz, Tom Coker, Jim Calafiore, M.D. Bright, Jorge Lucas and Dan Fraga during its gigantic 62-issue run. It was so successful, it was the first Marvel Knights book to move out of the small imprint and into the Marvel Universe at large, being taken over by the main title editors instead of the upstarts Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti. After downloading all these issues from Black Panther history, this series was the first one I sat down to reread, and what a reread it was.

off the rack #1268
Monday, July 1, 2019
Happy Canada Day! Our great nation is 152 years old and I feel it in my bones. This is due to us installing a baby car seat into my CUV yesterday. My niece and her 7 month old daughter are coming from Bahrain and I am picking them up at the airport tomorrow. Thus the need for a car seat. I felt that the car seat manufacturer's manual left out some important details in their instructions. I felt the same way about my owner's manual for my 2018 Honda C-RV. Thank Thor for Google. Penny's help in finding the well hidden anchor points was greatly appreciated. It's a gorgeous day for a nation's birthday party. Sunny with a high of 28 degrees C or 82 degrees F (for all you non-metric folks). We'll be gathering with dear friends downtown so it's time to put on my happy face.
Conan the Barbarian #7 - Jason Aaron (writer) Mahmud Asrar (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This is a terrific one issue story that chronicles Conan's revenge against a slimeball merchant. The lovely ladies helping him out are a special treat.
Doctor Strange #15 - Mark Waid (writer) Barry Kitson (pencils) Scott Koblish (inks) Brian Reber (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Herald Supreme part 4. The threat to the realms of magic and science posed by a hopped up Galactus reaches its climax. Time for Doctor Strange to rally the troops. I know everything will be hunky dory after next issue's spectacular conclusion but the fun comes from seeing how the good guys persevere.
Action Comics #1012 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Szymon Kudranski (art) Brad Anderson (colours) Josh Reed (letters). Rose and Thorn make a surprise appearance. I love when obscure characters play a significant role in a story. This book does not escape being pulled into Brian's Event Leviathan either so pay close attention crossover fans.
Thor #14 - Jason Aaron (writer) Scott Hepburn (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). I really hope this new Thor Corps isn't how the good guys win the War of the Realms. Malekith can't be defeated that easily.
The Avant-Guards #6 - Carly Usdin (writer) Noah Hayes (art) Rebecca Nalty (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). This issue focuses on Ashley. She's coaching due to the injury to her knee and it's her birthday. Oh yeah, the team play three games too.
Runaways #22 - Rainbow Rowell (writer) Andre Genolet (art) Michael Garland (colours) Niko Henrichon (art page 20) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I've always liked the bright and airy art in this series so seeing the dark more realistic work on the last page made me cringe. It may suit the Doombot story better but I hope it doesn't last.
Detective Comics #1006 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Kyle Hotz (art) David Baron (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Oh boy, it's the Spectre. I prefer this Spirit of Vengeance over Marvel's Ghost Rider because he's so freaking cool with the green and white costume. The Spectre recruits Batman to find his alter ego, Jimmy Corrigan, after he's been spirited away by a cult. The cover blurb was swiped from the Arrow TV show.
Fantastic Four #11 - Dan Slott (writer) Paco Medina, Kevin Libranda, Paolo Villanelli & Juanan Ramirez (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Valeria and Franklin get tested for their driver's licenses. Meanwhile, Doctor Doom is back to his nefarious ways. Wait until you see which classic bad guy he teams up with.
War of the Realms #6 - Jason Aaron (writer) Russell Dauterman (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This is it Thor fans, the epic conclusion to a multi-realm spanning war. Let's see here. Yes, I was very satisfied with how Malekith was defeated. Not spoiling anything. You knew that the good guys would win. I didn't even mind the bit of time traveling involved as it included some of my favourite characters. I loved the return of an old friend thought dead and how it was accomplished. The art by Russell Dauterman made this story so much more epic than the usual fare out there. So now it's onwards and upwards. All hail All Father Thor!
War of the Realms the Punisher #3 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Marcelo Ferreira (pencils) Roberto Poggi (inks) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I did not like how this story ended. Some may argue that Frank's uncompromising rules about dealing with criminals justified what he did but I would have preferred a different fate for Ferrante. This last issue started with a surprise twist that I didn't see coming though.
War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #4 - Greg Pak (writer) Gang Hyuk Lim, Moy R. & Pop Mhan (art) Federico Blee & Andres Mossa (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This was fun while it lasted but the ending was much too pie in the sky for me. As much as I enjoy some of Greg Pak's writing and identify with the characters of Asian persuasion I don't think I'll read the new Agents of Atlas book. There are just too many characters to keep track of.
Avengers #20 - Jason Aaron (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Mark Morales with Ed McGuinness (inks) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This War of the Realms tie-in focuses on She-Hulk and the changes she's gone through recently. I don't much like how she's monosyllabic when she's a Hulk now. I'm glad the war is over and I look forward to seeing the team in peace time before the next bunch of bad guys show up.
The Amazing Spider-Man #24 - Nick Spencer (writer) Ryan Ottley (pencils) Mark Morales & Cliff Rathburn (inks) Nathan Fairbairn (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). My opinion of this title continues to slide. The art is just okay as well as the writing. I didn't like Mysterio in costume during his psychoanalysis session. The only thing keeping me reading is finding out who the new super villain Kindred is. Oh my god, I just figured it out. It's a clone. Poopypants.
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #8 - Tom Taylor (writer) Ken Lashley (art, breakdowns page 15) Scott Hanna (finishes page 15) Nolan Woodard (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). This story guest stars the Prowler, the Hobie Brown one not Miles's uncle. Spidey teams up with the reformed criminal to investigate a shady crowd funding company. The new super villain's name is Mr. Helminth. Ken Lashley's angular art is going to take some getting used to.
The Superior Spider-Man #8 - Christos Gage (writer) Lan Medina (pencils) Cam Smith (inks) Andy Troy & Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Travis Lanham (letters). The team up with the West Coast Avengers continues in this War of the Realms tie-in. I love the lesson in humility that Otto gets from Gwenpool. If the next issue teaser is any indication, Norman Osborn's rears his ugly head soon.
The Spider-Man Annual #1 presents Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham - Jason Latour (writer) David Lafuente (art) Rico Renzi (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This is super punny if you're in the mood for some Marvel self deprecating humour. Otherwise take a hard pass. The art is amazing though, which is why I grabbed this off the rack.

WW II remembered on inscribed notes
By Mark Hotz
I have received a lot of positive feedback on the past few articles on interesting war-related signed currency, and so I have decided to continue this series for a few more months. This month we will be starting World War II, a conflict that produced countless numbers of inscribed bank notes, many of which are the familiar “short snorter” type described in previous articles.
I have been collecting these for years, and so have around 100 or more at this point. I always tried to pick out notes that told some sort of story: be it the name of a ship, the date of a flight and locations, and other pertinent information. All too many short snorters encountered just have the signatures of a group of officers and/or soldiers/sailors, without any linking content.
So this month I have chosen eight notes as a representative sampling of the types of World War II-inscribed notes and short snorters that collectors might encounter. It is worth pointing out that most of these notes tend to be on $1 Hawaii overprint or $1 North Africa Yellow Seal notes, as well as Series 1935-A $1 Silver Certificates and the occasional 1928 “funnyback types.” Additionally, countless foreign notes with signatures of American troops are available, and I will present some of those in the future.
Fig. 1. This Hawaii $1 short snorter bears signatures of buddies heading to or from a beach landing aboard the ‘USS Laurens.’
First, we will look at a $1 Hawaii note, which is covered with signatures that seem to be just first names or “nicknames.” Inscribed along the back top margin is “Wallace ABOARD THE U.S.S. LAURENS.” On both sides are written the names of his buddies: Seifirth, Larimore, Perron, Hale, Turner, Hudson, Ed Karpo, and William R. Liggio.
The U.S.S. Laurens (APA-153) was an Auxiliary Personnel Attack ship used to unload troops who assault enemy held beaches. It was 14,900 tons fully loaded and 436’ overall length. It was a Victory ship built in 1944 or 1945. The signatures on the bill are likely from a Marine or Army unit enroute to or from a landing. The Laurens was commissioned late in the war. Our major landings in those years were the Marianas (June 1944), Philippines (September 1944), Iwo Jima (February 1945) and Okinawa (June 1945).
Fig 2. Sgt. George Whited recorded his long flight from Fortaleza, Brazil to Dakar, French West Africa (now Senegal) on this $1 1935-A Silver Certificate.
Second, we have a Series of 1935-A $1 Silver Certificate inscribed on the face as follows: “Sgt. George C. Whited flew the Atlantic Ocean on March 16, 1944. Distance of 1962 miles in 11 hours and 42 minutes from Fortaleza Brazil to Dakar French West Africa.” The note bears the attesting signature of Jimmy Moore and the face side has five signatures of the airplane crew.
Fig. 3. John Miles recorded his double crossing of the “Inter-Date Line” going to theatre on a B-29 and then going home on a B-29 on Oct. 28, 1945.
Third, we have another $1 Hawaii note inscribed on the back, as follows: “Short Snorter 3/15/45 John R. Miles. Crossed Inter-Date going over seas on B-29. In B-29 crossed the Inter-Date Line going home 10/28/45.” In the center of the back of the note are signatures of his friends on the flight home: Leonard L. Polk, Roger L. Bonfils, Stanley A. Lane, Carl A. Guffre, Stanley L. Blounts, etc.
Fig. 4. K.E. Barnum recorded his flight from Guadalcanal to Tarawa on Feb. 11, 1945. He also wrote “SHORT SNORTER” on the note.
Fourth, another $1 Hawaii inscribed on the back: “Bo. No. 39557 Feb. 11, 1945 K.E. BARNUM. SHORT SNORTER. GUADALCANAL – TARAWA” (above). On the face of the note, the captain of the plane has written: “Flew from Guadal Canal/Tarawa/Canton Island/Palmyra Atoll/Honolulu –S.L. Poquerane, Capt. U.S.N.” (below).
Fig. 5. On the face of the Barnum note (Fig. 4 above), the flight captain recorded the entire flight from Guadalcanal to Honolulu with the various stops along the way.
Canton Island was originally part of the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands. In 1938, Pan Am Airways built an airfield on it to be used as a stopover on its route from Hawaii to New Zealand. American forces occupied it during World War II, enlarged the airfield, and used it for various aircraft between 1942 and 1943. Palmyra Atoll, located midway between Hawaii and American Samoa, was the site of the Palmyra Atoll Naval Air Station between 1941 and 1947.
Fig. 6. An anonymous serviceman bade goodbye to Honolulu and greetings to Eniwetok Atoll on Dec. 4, 1944.
Fifth, yet another $1 Hawaii. This one is very simple yet poignant. On the face, in bright blue ink: “Aloha-Oahu Nov. 16, 1944. Hafa Cheluho. Eniwetok, Dec. 4, 1944.” (“Goodbye Oahu, How are you?”) in the Chamorro language of Guam Eniwetok (“Atoll”).
Fig. 7. This short snorter on a $1 North Africa note records Leroy Weil’s travels in North Africa (Casablanca) and to Italy during 1943 and 1944.
Next, we have a $1 North Africa (Yellow Seal) note that is chock full of signatures. Around the face periphery it reads: “Short Snorter Leroy R. Weil CASABLANCA – 1943.” Along the back it shows other places the note went: Rome, St. Vittore, Monte Cassino, etc. and bears the signatures of other soldiers and marines met along the way. Some of the signatures I can make out are: Mark Reardon, Joseph J. Connally, W.J. Butler, William W. Smith, James Lunning, Angus Towne, Roger Sebbag, and Elmer H. Hagle, 2nd Lt.
Fig. 8. This Hawaii $1 note bearing signatures of the flight crew records of flight from Windsor, Ontario, Canada to Dawson Creek, Alaska and then on to Pearl Harbor on April 4, 1943.
Seventh, another $1 Hawaii note, with a simple inscription around the back margins: “Short Snorter from Windsor, Ont., Canada to Dawson Creek, Alaska to Pearl Harbor. April 4, 1943.” Six signatures of the flight crew are at the far right.
Fig. 9. Col. Hoffman offers “Good Luck” to Generalissimo Chiang kai-Shek and Nationalist China on this 1935-A $1 Silver Certificate, circa 1949.
Last, but certainly not least, a Series of 1935-D $1 Silver Certificate star note, inscribed on the face as follows: “Good Luck / Gen. Chiang Kai-shek and /Nationalist China/ Col. P.J. Hoffman.” Since the 1935-D notes were issued after 1949, this inscription probably refers to either the final fight between Nationalist and Communist Chinese forces on the mainland, or the establishment of Nationalist China on Taiwan.
Part of the fun of collecting these numismatic souvenirs of World War II is that they tell a story of a particular serviceman, where he went, and where he might have been on a certain day. The difficulty is deciphering the signatures themselves. Not only because they are in often sloppy cursive, but mainly because the signatures often blend in with the design of the currency, especially the portrait and the dark green panels on the backs. However, with some perseverance one can garner good information.
In coming months, I will present to you various notes bearing signatures of famous or well-known personages of the time: politicians, military leaders, entertainers, etc. All of these are notes that I found by deciphering the signatures myself—none were purchased with the signatures already identified.
Thank you all for your support of my various articles in Bank Note Reporter over lo these long 20 years of writing. I will get back the theme of “Notes on National Banks” in due time. In the meantime, I hope you will continue to enjoy seeing interesting items from my personal collection. Best personal wishes for a prosperous and joyous New Year.

A Wedding at The Grounds of Alexandria
This post A Wedding at The Grounds of Alexandria first appeared on The Wedding Community Blog
This wedding is super cool, super stylish, super relaxed and best all, super fun! We have never featured a wedding with a piñata before, but we now feel that every wedding should have one! Kirstie and Emilio’s wedding at The Grounds of Alexandria is just amazing (can you tell we love it?!).
The wedding reception looks so relaxed and fun; the long banqueting tables where guests feasted on the most delicious looking food set the scene for the relaxed atmosphere. The incredible hanging baskets, beautiful floral centrepieces and cute pot plants were the perfect decor for the day, not to mention the really cool ‘I Got You Babe’ illuminated sign that made a great backdrop for the pictures.
We adore Kirstie’s Oscar de la Renta wedding dress. It’s so simple, feminine and stylish, and it is complemented so well with the bridesmaids’ beautiful silver-grey dresses.
Lara Hotz was the lady who captured this wedding, and her pictures tell such a beautiful story of Kirstie and Emilio’s fabulous day.
The Strongest Friendship
“Emilio and I met in our first lecture at uni. I was sitting behind him, he turned around and started a conversation, and the rest is history. We got along so well and spent so much time together. I think that’s the reason we make such a great team – our relationship is founded on the strongest friendship.
“Emilio proposed while we were away for a glamping getaway for his birthday. From the very beginning I was suspecting he might pop the question, especially when we went on a hike followed by a romantic picnic by the beach. However, he didn’t propose then!
“In the end he actually caught me completely off guard. Late that evening I came out of the shower and Emilio was down on one knee. He was surrounded by candles and had a pink diamond ring in his hand. I managed to say yes between the happy tears, and laughter at the fact that he had actually surprised me after all!”
Organised and Talented
“I have no idea what we would have done without our photographer, Lara. Emilio and I are like deer in the headlights when we are in the spotlight or in front of a camera. But Lara is one of the most organised and talented people we have ever met. We have nothing but praise for her, and she truly went above and beyond.
“I also want to mention my make-up artist, Liv Lundelius. Her passion for honest, natural make-up is so refreshing. I felt so beautiful and, most importantly, I felt like myself.”
The Grounds of Alexandria
“Long before we were even engaged I knew that I wanted to have our wedding at The Grounds of Alexandria. It’s one of our favourite spaces.
“Our favourite detail from the day was the ‘I Got You Babe’ sign. It was a stunning backdrop to our first dance, and it illuminated the room beautifully.
“Our family and friends helped us make a few things, including the bride and groom piñatas. They were so tough to crack though we ended up tearing them to shreds!”

Fig 2.
